Biography of Richard Howard

Richard Howard is a graduate of the Universities of Warwick (LLB) and London (King’s College; Diploma in European Community Law). He was admitted as a Solicitor in 1981 and practised as a partner in firms in Gray's Inn and the City of London until 1995. Since 1995 he has been the Principal of Richard Howard & Co.

Richard has acted for media companies since the early 1980’s including one of the major ITV broadcasters advising on commercial, compliance and litigation matters. He represents many UK producers and overseas broadcasters in contractual negotiations with the BBC and advises producers supplying national and regional programmes and series for both the BBC and ITV Network. Richard also advises film financiers and producers.

Since the early 1990’s and the advent of satellite television, Richard has been involved in many satellite channel launches, and joint ventures. He has dealt with transponder leasing, uplink, play out and EPG contracts advising customers of satellite broadcasters.

For over 25 years Richard has advised on defamation copyright and regulatory compliance matters and acted for both claimants and defendants in libel and copyright actions.

In addition to his media practice, Richard advises companies in the telecommunications, medical, HR, transport and manufacturing sectors on Shareholders agreements, acquisitions, sales, company law and general commercial advice. Many of the firm’s clients have operations off shore and in the US, Middle East and Africa.

Richard Howard is married with three children and lives in Buckinghamshire. He is a member of The Royal Automobile Club (Pall Mall) and of the Oxford Diocesan Church Bell Ringers. He is a student of Napoleonic and First World War military history and an annual visitor to the Western Front. Richard Howard still plays some cricket and is a Level One R.F.U. qualified Rugby coach.
